Churchill Downs Launches Casino Segment of Terre Haute Resort in Indiana

Last updated: April 09, 2024

The Terre Haute Casino Resort, operated by Churchill Downs, opens its doors to guests with a bustling grand opening. The expansive property offers a diverse range of gaming options, dining establishments, and entertainment venues, marking a significant economic boost for the city of Terre Haute and the state of Indiana.

Grand Opening of Terre Haute Casino Resort Marks New Era for Vigo County

The director’s plan to celebrate the casino’s second anniversary came into being as the guests were greeted in Las Vegas like never before. The event started with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Churchill’s officials, the state government officials, and the local authorities. Lying south-east of the city’s center, right near the area of Terre Haute Regional Airport, is this impressive 400,000 square foot place that is open to visitors to play, along with the dining and bar outlets, on the casino floor. Some of the appealing features we have are 1,000 slot machines, 36 live dealer table games, and a race and sports book.

CEO of Churchill Downs, Bill Carstanjen, drew attention to the importance of the new opening for this city as the targeted goals were now fulfilled. Carstanjen sees this warming-up moment as the tour’s genesis, where this initiative’s effect on Vigo County and the broader Indiana place starts to create a ripple effect.

Furthermore, the facility has various eateries, including the famous steak house, grill, soda bar, and two bars, which make the Terre Haute Resort Casino a complete entertainment venue.

Terre Haute Casino Resort: A Boost for Local Economy and Tourism

Terre Haute Casino Resort witnessed its opening being very busy as over two thousand guests headed for its gaming room during the first hour, reports casino company officials. The brownfield has already employed more than 500 permanent employees, and it has reinforced substantial amounts of the new tax revenue into the economy of local people, which could eventually be up to tens of millions a year. Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun celebrated the event as an outright opportunity to invite visitors not just from the region but also from the whole country and even internationally and stressed the significance of it as a community-building ability.

Situated on Indiana’s western edge and home to several renowned educational institutions, including Indiana State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Terre Haute is primed to become a hub for entertainment and leisure with the introduction of the Terre Haute Casino Resort.

Churchill Downs officials disclosed plans for the resort’s expansion, including the imminent opening of its 122-room hotel on May 15 and the forthcoming debut of its outdoor pool and bar area. This strategic development aims to enhance the resort’s appeal and provide guests with a comprehensive hospitality experience. As the project unfolds, it is anticipated to solidify Terre Haute’s position as a destination for both gaming enthusiasts and leisure travelers, contributing to the city’s economic growth and cultural vibrancy.

Spectacle License Revoked, Churchill Downs Wins Terre Haute Bid

Both unexpectedly, in a give and take, Churchill Downs becomes the possible casino partner for Terre Haute when Spectacle Entertainment gets its license revoked. The property was first granted a license by the Indiana Gaming Commission (IGC), but a competitive bid from Spectacle in association with Hard Rock International gave the company the upper hand among those running for legalization of the gambling grounds in the state. However, this shady move by company executives turned out to be their bane, as Spectacle ended up losing its chance of becoming the locus for a new gambling facility.

The concerted investigation that followed has, however, left fines for Spectacle and its subsequent termination; the project is now confused. Mr. Greg Gibson, a devoted local businessman, participated in a bid to take over the project but returned no positive outcome. As a room, therefore, the International Government Centre (IGC) had to initiate a new bidding process. Concludingly, Churchill Downs won the bid, and there were other proposals from Full House Resorts and a recently renamed Hard Rock effort. One could say that this is a breaking point in finding out how something like Casino was being developed in Terre Haute.
